St. John’s Basilica

St John's Basilica

The St. John’s Basilica was a great church, which is located 4 km’s from the ancient city of Ephesus. Justinian constructed it in the 6th Century for the author of the Fourth Gospel, evangelist and prophet. It is believed it stands above the burial site of St. John. The church was modeled after the now lost Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople.

It is believed that John the Apostle traveled from the capital of Israel to the town of Ephesus where he stayed for the remaining of his life. It had been throughout his time there that Emperor of Rome exiled him to the island of Patmos, where he wrote Revelation (the Apocalypse). Once Marcus Cocceius Nerva became emperor St. John was pardoned and came back to Ephesus, where he lived the rest of his days. Currently, buried in St. John’s Basilica.
